Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online
Name: Dr.-Ing. Guillaume Alix, Research and Development Engineer
Company: IFP Energies nouvelles
Presentation Title: F2021-CAF-031 On the integration of a K-k turbulence approach to improve CFM1D combustion modelling in modern Spark Ignition engines
Please introduce yourself briefly…
After obtaining my diploma in Engineering from Ecole Centrale de Nantes, and a PhD from Ecole Centrale de Lyon on hybrid vehicles, I joined IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN, Carnot Institute), where I have been a Research and Development Engineer in System Simulation since 2007.
IFPEN is a public-sector research center based in Rueil-Malmaison, France. Its scope covers the fields of energy, transport and the environment.
At IFPEN, I have realized different work focusing on the simulation of internal combustion engine, vehicle dynamics and alternative energy production devices.
What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?
I will talk about improvements made on IFPEN 0-D phenomenological combustion model used to simulate internal combustion engines.
Turbulence representation has been revised to better account for its effect on combustion process considering engine settings variations.
The new model is validated on extensive engine databases, for different settings variations, to assess its level of predictivity.
What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?
Participants will gain an overview of the CFM-1D model capability to predict in-cylinder combustion process.
Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?
Today, global warming is the most important drive considering research on the automotive field, which has led the EU to define a target of decarbonized mobility in 2050.
To answer this concern, a massive electrification of powertrains is operated in the automotive industry, from hybrid or plug-in hybrid vehicle to electric vehicle.
For hybrid vehicle and long-range applications that still require an internal combustion engine, reducing its carbon footprint remains an important challenge, that can be performed mainly through the use of low carbon fuels (biofuels or hydrogen).
Today, global warming is the most important drive considering research on the automotive field, which has led the EU to define a target of decarbonized mobility in 2050.
What challenges do these trends present?
These new trends are challenging in terms of system modelling as they require the development of new powertrain concepts. This includes new fuels for internal combustion engine on one hand, but also new technology developments in fuel cells, batteries and electric machines, as well as new ways to consider mobility with rapid evolution in connected mobility.
And what opportunities do these trends offer?
The complexification of powertrains makes System Simulation more and more useful to optimize systems conception and on-board energy use, giving several opportunities for R&I development. For example, studying new systems require the modelling and understanding of new components to assess the adaptation of internal combustion engines, with new combustion concepts for new fuels, including hydrogen, and development of massive electrified or connected mobility.

About the FISITA World Congress
Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.
Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.
Partner with us
The FISITA World Congress is one of the most important and prestigious gatherings of mobility engineers and executives in the automotive and mobility calendar. We can offer a number of exceptional promotion opportunities for organisations, associations and companies enabling them to meet their targeted audience and interact with the key decision-makers in and around FISITA 2021.
There are many opportunities to partner with us at the upcoming Congress. Take a look at the virtual prospectus for the full list and easily book a partnership package or virtual booth, or contact Ms. Marie Březinová, Industry Liaison and Sales Manager, Guarant International spol. s r. o., on brezinova@guarant.cz.
