Congress: Mahle Modular Hybrid Powertrain Concept

Event: FISITA World Congress 14-16 September 2021 online

Name: Mike Bassett, Head of Research

Company: MAHLE Powertrain

Presentation Title: F2020-ADM-070 Modular Hybrid Powertrain Concept

Please introduce yourself briefly…

Mike Bassett is the Head of Research at MAHLE Powertrain, and is responsible for leading global research activities, where there is currently a strong focus on advanced combustion systems for renewable and zero carbon fuels and also developing technologies to enhance electrified mobility. Mike studied Mechanical Engineering at Bristol University and then for a PhD at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), focusing on the thermodynamic modelling of internal combustion engines. Mike then joined Lotus Engineering where he worked in the Software Development Department, specializing in the modelling of internal combustion engine performance and also drive-cycle simulation of conventional and hybrid vehicles. He moved to MAHLE Powertrain in 2007 to join the Performance Analysis Group.

What you will talk about at this year’s FISITA World Congress?

Mahle Powertrain has developed a modular hybrid powertrain that is scalable across a wide range of vehicles.

Mahle’s Modular Hybrid Powertrain is based around a high-voltage PHEV architecture, with a dedicated hybrid internal combustion engine and a dual-mode hybrid electric drive.

The dedicated hybrid engine features Mahle’s jet ignition system enabling high thermal efficiency to be achieved with a low cost engine architecture.

What benefits will participants gain from your presentation?

The presentation will briefly touch on the legislative pressure that the automotive industry is facing and will show the rationale that has led to the Mahle Modular Hybrid Powertrain Concept. How the powertrain can be readily adapted to suit a broad range of vehicles will be presented. The technologies that are applied to achieve a low cost, compact, efficient and adaptable product will be discussed.

Which trends do you consider as the most important for your domain of research and your geographical region?

The biggest challenge facing the automotive industry in Europe is the proposed ban on CO2 emissions for all new cars from 2035. The proposed regulation is based on tail-pipe emissions, so effectively excludes any potential benefits offered by bio or e-fuels and is therefore a ban of internal combustion engines which operate on any hydrocarbon based fuel, such as gasoline or diesel. Additionally, the Euro7 emissions regulations, which are set to come into effect in 2027, will require significant development of existing engines to enable them to meet these more stringent targets. The short life-span of any engine developed to meet these targets is likely to bring the end of the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines forward to the Euro7 implementation date.

The biggest challenge facing the automotive industry in Europe is the proposed ban on CO2 emissions for all new cars from 2035.

What challenges do these trends present?

An effective ban of internal combustion engines in under 7 years has resulted in a step change in the focus of automotive manufacturers from the development of internal combustion engines to battery electric propulsion systems. The speed of this transition has been presented challenges for engineering consultancies, such as Mahle Powertrain, in terms of the investment in new facilities and the development of new capabilities to enable us to support the rapidly changing requirements of our customers.

And what opportunities do these trends offer?

Whilst the pace of the transition has been challenging, it has led to a breadth of technologies where we have developed our capabilities and service offerings, particularly around the design, analysis, prototyping, validation and vehicle integration of transmission systems, battery packs, fuel cell balance of plant, electric machines and inverters.

About the FISITA World Congress

Since 1947, the FISITA World Congress has been the leading international meeting place for industry experts, engineers and executives to exchange ideas and discuss the trends that drive the automotive industry forward. The theme for the 38th FISITA World Congress is 'From automobile to mobility. New roles. New challenges' and it will take place 14-16 September 2021, with the opportunity for the global audience to join virtually available for the first time. Registration is now open, with the Early Bird and special registration rates available until 31 August 2021.

Content from the 2020 FISITA Web Congress is available within the FISITA Technical Library, while material from previous Congress events back to 1998 is available in the FISITA Store. By the time of this year’s Congress, all the content will be available within the FISITA Technical Library, with free access provided to FISITA members.

Partner with us

The FISITA World Congress is one of the most important and prestigious gatherings of mobility engineers and executives in the automotive and mobility calendar. We can offer a number of exceptional promotion opportunities for organisations, associations and companies enabling them to meet their targeted audience and interact with the key decision-makers in and around FISITA 2021.

There are many opportunities to partner with us at the upcoming Congress.
