Experimental and Numerical Investigation of C/C Material Unstable Friction-Induced Vibration

Name: Alessandro Lazzari

Presentation Title: Experimental and Numerical Investigation of C/C Material Unstable Friction-Induced Vibration (EB2020-STP-017)

Session: NVH Fundamentals, Thursday 20th May 2021, 09:00 - 10:40 (Central Europe Time)

What do you find most interesting about the topic of your presentation?

The most attractive feature of the topic I will present is about understanding and predicting the material response of Carbon-Carbon materials under different braking operational conditions. By working in this research field, it is possible to contribute to a further improve of disc brake system performance and to a better characterization of such materials.

When discussing this topic with industry peers, what question are you most frequently asked? How do you answer it?

The most frequently asked question is: “Is it possible to distinguish the observed unstable friction-induced vibrations and the mechanism behind the occurrence of such phenomena?”

In the presentation, an experimental and numerical approach has been developed in order to answer to this question and to provide further information on the nature of the unstable dynamic response of C/C materials.

Who do you think will be most interested in your presentation, and who would you most like to ask questions about it?

I think that industries working in the field of automotive disc brake systems would be keenly interested in this topic and in the presentation. However, taking into account the widespread use of C/C materials in many other commercial applications, this topic can be of great interest also for other industries working with braking systems, where high temperature conditions are reached and high performance are needed. Questions from these manufacturers, as well as from other researchers working in this field, would be greatly appreciated.

What specific topics or technology are you hoping to see in other presentations or in the exhibition?

It would be very interesting to see other presentations related to C/C materials and high-performance brake lining materials. Moreover, it would be interesting to see other techniques and methods for studying the occurrence of unstable friction-induced vibrations originated during braking.

About Alessandro Lazzari.

Alessandro Lazzari is a PhD student in cotutelle with Sapienza University of Roma and INSA-Lyon, since 2018. He graduated with honors in mechanical engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, in 2018. During his studies of mechanical design, he took a special interest for mechanical vibrations and tribology. His master’s thesis, carried out in collaboration with Brembo S.p.A, is about a tribological and dynamical characterization of high-performance brake pad materials. Over the following years, his field of research has been focused on the characterization of the frictional and vibrational response of brake materials for industrial applications. During his job experience, he had the opportunity to work on different test rigs and to learn experimental tools for signal acquisition and analysis of friction-induced vibrations. Most of his work has been focused on NVH issues related to the occurrence of unstable vibrational phenomena, during frictional contact. During his PhD thesis, he also worked on numerical models, aimed to further characterize the experimental outcome, and physiochemical studies of the friction surface chemical composition. The main objective of his PhD thesis is the characterization of friction-induced vibrations and tribological response of reinforced carbon-carbon composite materials, adopted for disc brake system applications.
