Presentation Title: Studying the Influence of the 3rd-body Formation on the Tribological Properties of High Performance Friction Materials (EB2020-MDS-030)
Session: Posters, Monday 17 May 2021, 17:30 - 19:30 (Central European Summer Time - CEST)
What do you find most interesting about the topic of your presentation?
The very promising frictional properties of tailored C/SiC ceramic brakes pads, show the possibility to compete with the current conventional brake pads and to overcome future challenges for electric driven vehicles.
When discussing this topic with industry peers, what question are you most frequently asked? How do you answer it?
What is C/C-SiC and why should I use it for friction applications?
C/C-SiC is a material that belongs to the class of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC). The material consists of carbon, carbon fibres, silicon and silicon carbide. This material exhibits extraordinary properties for friction applications such as:
• temperature resistance of above 1300 °C and high thermal shock resistance
• low density of ca 2.0 g/cm3
• pronounced damage tolerance
• inherent corrosion resistance
• extremely low wear rates easily enabling life-time braking systems with low particle emissions
Who do you think will be most interested in your presentation, and who would you most like to ask questions about it?
Anyone who is interested in innovative new friction materials that push the borders of current friction materials and exceed the demands for future mobility concepts
What specific topics or technology are you hoping to see in other presentations or in the exhibition?
Other innovative material and process concepts to solve the demand for environmentally friendly braking materials for future generations. Especially, concepts and materials to reduce particulate emissions, such as coated rotors and new brake pad formulations.

About Felix Wich.
My name is Felix Wich, I am a research associate at the chair of ceramic materials engineering at University of Bayreuth in Germany. I graduated in Materials Science and Engineering and specialised in high temperature materials, lightweight structures and design and advanced reinforced materials.
My current fields of interest as a PhD student are Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) for friction and high-performance applications. I have experience in manufacturing, characterisation and analysis of CMC materials for demanding industrial applications including techniques as the Liquid Silicon Infiltration (LSI) process, tribological characterisation on a full-scale flywheel dynamometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy as well as X-ray diffraction techniques.
I am an alumni of the EuroBrake Students Opportunities Programme (ESOP) and was granted the opportunity to join this fantastic programme in 2018 and 2019 which allowed me the chance to get a deep insight in the interesting field of braking technology and the demands of the braking industry.
I am happy to contribute to this year’s EuroBrake community as the presenting author of EB2020-MDS-030: “Studying the influence of the 3rd-body formation on the tribological properties of high performance friction materials” in which my newest scientific results concerning additives and wear mechanism for CMC materials will be presented and discussed.
I am very much looking forward to the discussions with leading scientists and experts of the braking industry.
