Performance of Solid and Segmented Railway Brake Discs - Temperatures, Wear and Fatigue Investigated

Name: Mandeep Singh Walia

Company: Green Cargo AB

Presentation Title: Performance of solid and segmented railway brake discs - Temperatures, wear and fatigue investigated by field experiments and simulations (EB2021-STP-016)

Session: Materials, Manufacturing and Design (rail), Wednesday 19th May 2021, 09:00 - 10:40 (Central Europe Summer Time - CEST)

What do you find most interesting about the topic of your presentation?

The most interesting part are the thermo camera recordings. It was one of the most challenging part of the experiments. Thermo camera could only record when connected to computer and there was no power source on freight train to supply power to the computer.

When discussing this topic with industry peers, what question are you most frequently asked? How do you answer it?

The most frequent question is about measurements, that why there is sudden drop in measured temperatures for discs in results. I show the recorded video of sliding thermocouples loosing contact with disc.

Who do you think will be most interested in your presentation, and who would you most like to ask questions about it?

Researchers from academics and industrial professionals. Anyone is welcome to ask questions.

What specific topics or technology are you hoping to see in other presentations or in the exhibition?

I hope to see more presentations on railway braking systems.

About Mandeep Singh Walia.

Presently employed as Locomotive Engineer at Green Cargo, Sweden since April 2020. My main responsibility is to lead the project that involves managing of Transmontana locomotive fleet. These are newly bought six-axle electric locomotives and are being operated in multiple traction in heavy haul operation in north of Sweden between Luleå and Borlänge. The main tasks in the project involves: quality inspections, warranty inspections, approval of vehicles before delivery, upgrade of vehicles, reporting technical and systematic faults, resolve issues with maintenance supplier and assure availability of vehicles for production.

Previously, I worked as doctoral candidate in the field of Railway mechanics in the Department of Mechanics and Maritimes Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The work presented here was performed in the doctoral project SD10. The topic of my doctoral thesis is “Mechanical braking systems for trains: A study of temperatures, fatigue and wear by experiments and simulations” and I presented my thesis on 20th November 2019.
