FISITA Newsletter - June 2024

Dear colleague,

Last week I had the pleasure of travelling to Mainz, Germany with the FISITA team for EuroBrake 2024. From the insightful keynotes packed with cutting-edge content, to the detailed technical sessions that pushed the boundaries of our knowledge, every moment of EuroBrake 2024 was fantastic. Our informative panel sessions provided deep dives into industry trends, sparking valuable discussions and ideas.

A massive thank you to all speakers, students and young engineers, delegates, sponsors and exhibitors for attending and contributing to the vibrant event. Thank you again, everyone, for making EuroBrake 2024 a success! See you all in Barcelona for the 2025 event.

I’m also pleased to announce three new corporate members. Welcome A2MAC1, SKon + and Ballard Power Systems. If you are interested in joining FISITA as a corporate or society member, please contact Julie Geraud, FISITA Chief Engagement Officer.

All the best,

Chris Mason

EuroBrake 2024: It’s about so much more than stopping

Martin Kahl, FISITA Chief Technology Officer reflects on the key topics discussed in Mainz.

Where once brake system engineers focused on NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), they now face unexpected challenges: non-exhaust emissions regulations, electrification and regenerative braking, brake-by-wire, and the potential of AI and big data. Then there's Euro 7, the first regulation to address non-exhaust emissions from tyres and brakes, driving innovation in brake systems. Despite the overwhelming challenge, automakers and suppliers are confident and eager to seize the golden opportunities ahead.

Intelligent safety technology in the protection of vulnerable road users

Check out this new article by FISITA’s Chief Technology Officer Martin Kahl, on the role of intelligent safety technology in the protection of vulnerable road users (VRUs). Read the full article here.

Key Points:

  • Over 3,200 people die on the world’s roads daily; 90% are in low/middle-income countries, and 53% are VRUs.

  • Eliminating road traffic fatalities and serious injuries (Vision Zero) seems optimistic; the challenge for the automotive industry is to deploy intelligent safety technology that protects VRUs.

  • Technology ranges from automatic emergency braking (AEB) and electronic stability control (ESC), to increasingly mandated tech such as intelligent speed assistance (ISA) systems, reverse cameras, and driver/occupant monitoring systems (DMS, OMS).

  • Major opportunity to leverage vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity.

  • FISITA is a co-chair of the UN International Telecommunication Union Expert Group looking at merging for automated vehicles, sustainable V2X, and the use of connectivity to protect VRUs.

  • VRUs are also the current focus of the FISITA Intelligent Safety Working Group, led by Armin Karle of Bosch and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Günther Prokop from Technische Universität Dresden. This working group’s white paper will be presented at the 2025 FISITA World Mobility Conference.

FISITA Corporate Member thought leadership contributions

As an additional benefit of the FISITA corporate membership, we invite your company to submit up to two thought leadership articles per calendar year.

Each FISITA member thought leadership piece will be published on the FISITA website and promoted online (newsletter and/or social media) to the technology of mobility community, from students to C-suite decision-makers.

This is a unique opportunity to share your thought leadership in the pre-competitive space.

For any questions, please contact FISITA PR and Communications Manager, Isabella Hammond.
