FISITA President Elect, Dr. Akihiko Saito, gave the opening remarks on behalf of FISITA at the 13th International Pacific Conference on Automotive Engineering which began on Monday 22 August 2005 in Gyeongju, Korea.

Speaking to a packed auditorium on the first morning of the conference, Dr. Saito, who is Senior Technical Executive of Toyota Motor Corporation and Vice Chairman of Denso, congratulated the Organising Committee of IPC-13 for assembling a diverse technical programme which he described as “excellent and highly topical”.

Dr. Saito noted the growing importance of the region to the global automotive industry, pointing out that 10 of FISITA’s 36 member societies were now located in the Asia Pacific region.

237 papers were scheduled for presentation by experts from 18 countries during the three-day conference, the theme of which was Harmony of Humans and Motor Vehicles. More than 500 delegates were registered to attend.

The first IPC Conference was organised in 1981 in the United States. Since then the conference has been successfully hosted by FISITA societies across the Asia Pacific region. Future conferences in the series will carry a new name: “APAC” which stands for Asia Pacific Automotive Engineering Conference. APAC-14 will return to the United States in the autumn of 2007, hosted by SAE International.
