ISC Speaker, Prof. Rui Fu on The role of the human driver in autonomous driving systems

Event: FISITA Intelligent Safety Conference China. 16 July Changchun, China and online

Name: Prof. Rui Fu, Professor

Company: Chang'an University

Presentation Title: The role of the human driver and social cognition attributes in autonomous driving systems

Session: Impacts of Human Factors on Safety

What are you planning to talk about at the Intelligent Safety Conference, and who do you think will benefit most from what you have to say?

I will talk about the role of the human driver in autonomous driving system and how to promote the social cognition attributes of the autonomous driving system. I think experts in the field of human factors engineering for autonomous driving systems and product planning designers for automobile manufacturing enterprises might be interested in my presentation.

Intelligent safety technology is at the heart of mobility development – how do you see it evolving as ADAS develops into fully autonomous functionality?

With the development of ADAS into fully autonomous driving systems, it is certain that the driving safety will be improved effectively. However, I still think a 'human-centered' intelligent safety system is necessary. The maturity of autonomous driving technology does not mean that the human driver can be completely disengaged. The role of the human driver in vehicle control needs to be redefined. The human driver's cognition and decision-making should possess a higher priority when confronting the complex scenarios with uncertainty, vulnerability and open-ended. How to fully integrate the driver's excellent cognitive competence for complex situations and the intelligent system's powerful perception and accurate execution ability, is one of the key technologies to improve the intelligent driving safety.

"The maturity of autonomous driving technology does not mean that the human driver can be completely disengaged. The role of the human driver in vehicle control needs to be redefined".

What other factors do you expect to shape the development of intelligent safety technology? (e.g., legislation or standards, new technology, or changing consumer expectations)

Firstly, the maturity of legislation and standards are the important factors that determine the application of intelligent safety technology. Similarly, the consumer expectations and acceptance will also influence the development of intelligent safety technology. In order to improve the acceptance of consumers, intelligent safety technology should pay more attention to the improvement of its own social cognition attributes while avoiding accidents, and ensure that the safety assessment criteria are consistent with those of human drivers in complex scenarios. Therefore, as the basis for the development of intelligent safety, new technologies and concepts should adapt to consumer expectations.

What attracts you personally to the area of intelligent safety?

Driving safety is directly related to people's lives and property, and the purpose of the development of intelligent safety is to reduce accidents and casualties. However, the intelligent systems may bring potential conflicts and risks when interacting with drivers. For example, frequent false positives or false negatives in warning systems, cognition conflicts between human and autonomous, and so on. Therefore, our team pays more attention to the integration of driver cognition and intelligent control, so as to improve the social cognition attribute of intelligent safety technology.

What advances or changes in intelligent safety would you most like to see implemented in mainstream vehicles?

As the user of intelligent safety system, the subjective perception of drivers or passengers are the direct results of judging the quality of the safety system. We want to see the intelligent safety system that takes into account both rationality and sensibility, and the decisions and behaviours derived from intelligent safety system should conform to traffic participants' expectations. Therefore, the intelligent systems should establish more effective interactions with drivers and other traffic participants, and accurately identify and comprehend the intentions of drivers and other participants.
