What are you planning to talk about at the Intelligent Safety Conference, and who do you think will benefit most from what you have to say?


The title of my presentation is "Building multi-level safety system for intelligent vehicles". Intelligent vehicles need to solve the problems of functional safety, expected functional safety and information security at the same time. The above three types of safety are inseparable and interrelated. How to look at the safety of intelligent vehicles from a system perspective, and how to design and construct the above three types of safety systems are issues of great concern to the industry. I hope my presentation can help those who are engaged in the design and development of intelligent vehicle systems.


Intelligent safety technology is at the heart of mobility development – how do you see it evolving as ADAS develops into fully autonomous functionality?


With the in-depth integration of "Intelligence", "Internet" and "Vehicles", on the one hand, automotive products have been redefined, and their passenger and cargo functions have been transformed into comprehensive travel services. On the other hand, the automotive industry business models, transportation systems, social experience and other aspects will also usher in huge changes. In this big wave of change, automotive safety will not only include traditional functional safety, but also two aspects: driving safety and value safety (driving safety: influence functional safety through network security; value safety: influence privacy and data through network security security), and cybersecurity technology will also be the cornerstone of the future development, laying basis for the development of intelligent and connected vehicles and their ecology.

What other factors do you expect to shape the development of intelligent safety technology? (e.g., legislation or standards, new technology, or changing consumer expectations)


As cybersecurity technology is a typical companion technology, there is no cybersecurity without a carrier, and the cybersecurity we are talking here is targeted at the intelligent and connected vehicles, so the biggest impact on the cybersecurity technology must come from the technical development level, technical architecture, service-oriented groups of intelligent and connected vehicles. Cybersecurity technology is also closely related to policies and regulations. A single technology can’t satisfy security most of the time, and supporting policies and regulations are needed.


What attracts you personally to the area of intelligent safety?


From a purely technical point of view, cybersecurity technology attracts me the most in two ways . One is that it often requires a full understanding of the carrier, including the carrier’s entire system architecture and technical development routes. This will give me a clearer and macroscopic understanding of the entire technical system and industrial development. The other one is that security use the Game Theory. Unlike other technical fields, there are no clear boundaries and indicators for the evaluation of security technology, but only the game between the red and blue sides. It’s a lot of fun.

What advances or changes in intelligent safety would you most like to see implemented in mainstream vehicles?


I hope that in the rapid development of automotive technology, especially intelligent and connected vehicles, security should be considered at the beginning of the research. In this way, it can avoid the "after-installing" of cybersecurity technology, and a systematic security protection architecture for the entire lifecycle could been established starting from the design stage.

About Prof. Shichun Yang


Shichun Yang is Professor and Dean of School of Transportation Science and Engineering, Beihang University. He has been selected as a leading talent of China’s National Ten Thousand Talents Plan and Young and Middle-Aged Leading Talents in Scientific and Technological Innovation managed by the Ministry of Science, and a National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker. He is a member of the China Society of Automotive Engineers, Deputy Secretary General of the Electric Vehicle Sub-Committee of the National Automotive Standardization Technical Committee, Co-chair of SAE Technical Committee of Vehicle Cybersecurity, and an expert of the Road Vehicle Working Group of China Intelligent Transportation Systems Association. He is mainly engaged in the research of autonomous driving technology, cloud-based battery management and vehicle cybersecurity. He has presided over more than 20 projects. He has published more than 120 papers in journals indexed in SCI/EI. He has published one monograph and acted as the chief editor of one national textbook. He has been granted 55 national invention patents and 9 international patents, and has received 9 national and provincial science and technology awards, among which, he has won the second prize of the National S&T Award as the first author, the first prize of the China Automotive Industry S&T Award, and the second prize of the S&T Award issued by Ministry of Education.
