Location: Pangbourne Technology Centre, Reading. bp is now operating a new hybrid working solution for office-based employees, with a split between remote and office working. Closing Date: 22/02/2022 Relocation Available: Negotiable The Advanced Mobility & Industrial Products (AMIP) team supports a significant portion of the Castrol business which has an RCOP ~ $1bn. It undertakes scientific research and delivers technology innovation to provide driveline, electric vehicle (EV) and Industrial (grease, metalworking fluids, robotics/wind gear oils etc.) product technology to Castrol and its customers. The team provides technology leadership and execution in these product areas to deliver Castrol’s product simplification and cost competitiveness agenda. The team provides technical support to Castrol and external customers across these product areas in the geographies in which Castrol operates. The team provides research insights into future product needs and solutions for sustainable mobility and manufacturing to inform future product design and business opportunities for bp entities including Castrol and Future Mobility & Solutions (FM&S). The team provides access to battery and electric vehicle testing capability for bp, and is developing increased capability in electrical charging and electric vehicle systems and modelling for Applied Sciences and for FM&S. The role of the Expert Technologist, Electrical Systems Management reports to the Senior Manager, EV Fluids Research and is to be the bp subject matter expert leading in the integration of thermal management concepts with the technology, hardware and software of connected vehicles and the associated charging infrastructure. Additionally, this role is a key interface with the FM&S electric and autonomous vehicle space.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide technical direction and expertise to integrate thermal management with vehicle electrification and autonomy.

  • Technical lead for delivery of broader understanding and development of technical expertise in vehicle electrical system architectures and electric charger systems to progress the adoption of direct thermal management technologies.

  • Lead/support pilot projects to assess new product propositions and alternative business models based around electrified vehicles and charger systems.

  • Development and delivery of bp’s vehicle technology and research workstreams in support of the bp ultra-fast charging strategy.

  • Technical lead for vehicle-related fast charging projects with automotive partners including Daimler, Ford, Renault, VW, and others.

  • Working with FM&S and bp Pulse to provide the technical insights and expertise to allow identification of innovative business opportunities within Electrification and Mobility.

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with external partners relevant to vehicle mobility/electrification.

  • Working with the team to develop vehicle systems simulation models that integrate direct thermal management solutions with vehicle charging and use.

The role complements the Expert Electrical Charging and Energy Infrastructure, Expert Electric Vehicle Systems and Simulation and the Expert Thermal Management roles within AMIP.

Essential Criteria

Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree with extensive hands-on experience of working on electrified vehicle technologies. Experience in development of electrified vehicle technologies likely gained in a vehicle OEM, Tier 1 or start-up. Knowledge of electrical propulsion systems would be useful. Experienced in customer interactions and in leading projects with 3rd parties. Experience in development of technology strategies and in working closely with marketing to develop new business entries and offers. Capability to analyse and interpret results combined with the application of modelling and simulation techniques. Professional registration as a chartered engineer (or equivalent) desirable.
