Mechanism of Particles Released into the Environment Formed by Brake Wear on Friction Surfaces

Name: Saša Vasiljević

Company: University of Kragujevac Presentation Title: Mechanism of Particles Released into the Environment That Is Formed by Brake Wear on Friction Surfaces (EB2021-EBS-010) Session: Poster Session, Monday 17th May 2021, 17:30 - 19:30 (Central European Summer Time - CEST)

What do you find most interesting about the topic of your presentation?

Environmental pollution today is a global problem on all continents. As someone who deals with motor vehicles, I am aware of the fact that we strive to reduce the emission of particles and other pollutants on our planet. By reducing the emission of harmful substances caused by the combustion of fuel, we are left with pollutants that do not emit particles in this case by combustion but by wear of surfaces or parts on vehicle. One of the pollutants is certainly the braking system, but specifically the friction surfaces of the brakes (disc and friction linings of the brake pads). In addition to reading a lot of literature, I have concluded that particles can be released into the environment in several ways. So I concluded that I could get rid of it in three specific ways, so I wanted to point out that fact but certainly to show during the test the concentration of particles that they are caused by the wear of the brakes, which needs to be paid attention to. The ways in which particles are released is further interesting to examine to see how most often particles are released.

When discussing this topic with industry peers, what question are you most frequently asked? How do you answer it?

I haven’t had many opportunities to talk to people from the industry on this topic. I have had many more opportunities to talk to people who deal with different areas related to motor vehicles. The most common questions are related to the formation of particles caused by brake wear, which are the types of brakes that wear most often and which have the highest emission of formed particles. The answers are mostly detailed, from the way the particles are formed to the impact on human health and the environment. Questions about how to prevent the formation of particles are certainly common, so the answers are mostly related to training drivers to use the brakes less when reducing speed or applying particle collecting technology’s.

Who do you think will be most interested in your presentation, and who would you most like to ask questions about it?

On my poster, I tried to show clearly and vividly a lot of answers to the questions of how and why particles are formed, but also how they are released into the environment, so there is a lot of space for discussion. Mainly researchers who also deal with the issue of environmental pollution by brake wear products, and even researchers who deal with the development of technologies for collecting particles during braking and which are part of the vehicle system. As for the questions, I would like them to be constructive questions that can have the development of a discussion with the aim of advancing joint research, as well as the development of new ideas.

What specific topics or technology are you hoping to see in other presentations or in the exhibition?

I certainly hope to see some new technologies and systems on vehicles that have the role of collecting particles whose source is the vehicle or other technologies of production or processing of brakes friction pairs in order to reduce the emission of the formed particles.
