What do you find most interesting about the topic of your presentation?
Thermal properties are vital in understanding the frictional performance of friction materials. Reasonable thermal diffusivities of brake pads and rotors can control the thermal fade phenomenon and achieve better frictional performance.
When discussing this topic with industry peers, what question are you most frequently asked? How do you answer it?
The most common question asked from the industry is “What would be the optimum value or range of thermal diffusivities/conductivities?” This is hard to answer since the compositions of the brake pads or brake rotors depend on the process adopted by the respective manufacturers. However, it could be possible to predict statistically by testing more materials and might need potential research funding to acquire more data.
Who do you think will be most interested in your presentation, and who would you most like to ask questions about it?
Industries that manufacture brake pads and rotors shall be interested in my research. However, industries that tend to apply wear-resistant coatings to brake rotors shall find it more interesting since these coatings are usually made of ceramic compounds and can potentially add to the thermal capacity of the base material. Most of the manufacturers are unaware of this fact and this information can add fuel to their market.
What specific topics or technology are you hoping to see in other presentations or in the exhibition?
I would like to see presentations related to aging of friction material and its impact on the overall corrosion and friction performance.

Rohit Jogineedi is a PhD student at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is working under Dr. Peter Filip on development and characterization of advanced environmentally friendly friction materials for new generation. His research also focusses on development of small-scale friction testing strategies using bench top testers.
