Raceyard Kiel, the student racing team from Fachhochschule Kiel (University of Applied Sciences) has won the FISITA Award for Best Newcomer at Formula Student Germany 2006.
The team scored higher than any other first-time entrant to take the special award comprising a trophy and prize money of EUR 1,000.
40 teams from 10 nations competed in the 4 day event which took place at the world-famous F1 Hockenheim-Ring. The competition is organised by VDI, the German association of engineers.
Describing his team's delight at winning the prestigious award, spokesperson, Henning Nissen said: "Suddenly we heard our name called out and no one could believe we had just won this award! None of our team members has ever learned so much as we have from this competition. Not just engineering knowledge, but also soft-skills like how to work with other people, how to find compromises or simply how to be responsible for something. We’d like to say thank you to the organisers of Formula Student Germany, and all the sponsors, including FISITA, because without them the event could not take place. Thanks for giving us the chance to show our qualities."
Formula Student Germany is based on the rules and principles of the Formula SAE competitions established by SAE International. Students build a single seat formula racecar with which they compete against teams from all over the world. The competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning.
The winning team is decided by a combination of static and dynamic judging. Firstly a jury of experts from the motorsport, automotive and supplier industries judge every team s car and sales plan based on construction, cost planning and sales presentation. Then each team has to prove themselves out on the track, where the students demonstrate in a number of performance tests how well their self-built racecars fare in their true environment.
